Seokhee Han

My name is Seokhee Han, and I am a junior in Christopher Dock Mennonite High School. This is my third year in America and since I am a junior, one of the most important years in high school, I try to balance myself between studying and getting along with others. I believe that all the priceless experiences in America will serve me well in future and help me shape my adulthood.

One reason I study here is that it has been my dream to study abroad learning various cultures. Even though staying in America leaving my family back in Korea is difficult, it is worth spending time here as I am able to meet new people, especially my host parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stratton. I am not the only one who is learning American cultures—my host parents also experience Korean cultures. I am truly thankful for them because they always care of me and give me valuable advice.

I want to major in International Relations when I go to college. I have always been interested in learning other cultures, languages and the relationship among several countries. Studying abroad is an advantage for me because I have a chance to take classes from different perspectives. All the classes at school do help me prepare for what I would like to study in the future, and I am so glad to have such privilege to have this opportunity.

It is definitely a blessing that I am able to learn something new not only from school but also from people here. I believe that Joy Education has helped me in various ways since I came here. Without Joy’s care, it would have been much hard for me to concentrate on studying and to enjoy life in America. Whenever I struggle, Joy is the one who takes good care of me and treats me like her child. I always feel much comfortable when I have a heart-to-heart talk with her whenever I just need to talk to somebody. I sincerely appreciate all the work that Joy’s education dedicates to me. Joy’s Education makes my life in America much better in any perspective!

I stayed at my aunt’s house in Minnesota for two years. Concerning and worrying about how I would be able to adjust to new environments, I came to Pennsylvania. All me and my parents could rely on was Joy education, because we did not know anything about Pennsylvania. Without my aunt who did everything for me, my life in Pennsylvania was very different from my life in Minnesota. Including school life and having host family, everything was completely new to me.

I was from a school where there were no international students at all. When Joy education had a meeting held once a month, I was able to meet and chat with other Korean students. The fact that I could talk to Joy, Soo and Esther when I miss Korea greatly helped me. When I first went to my school, PJP, as a junior, I was involved in activities I like such as band, chorus, CSC and art club. After school, I spent time with my host family playing games or going for a walk. On weekends, I usually went out to mall, Korean restaurants or to Philadelphia. I did lots of activities with my host family, too. Of course having a host family was not always easy, but as much as I had hard time, I learned something out of it. Now, even hard time is such a priceless experience for me. When I had a problem or needed anything, I could always talk to Joy and get help. By her favor, it’s come to the end of my senior year and I am ready for my graduation.

Being polite to my host family, I did not give up studying for SAT and taking care of my GPA. Thankfully, Joy gave me some good advice and suggestions. With communication with my counselor and hard work, I got accepted from many universities I wanted to go. I want to major in psychology which I had been interested in since I was young, and become a psychologist or a psycho therapist. I am very thankful to Joy Education, that helped me get offered from University of Washington and get through two years of my life in Pennsylvania successfully.

 Yongwoo (Rachel) Kwon

My name is Yongwoo (Rachel) Kwon, and I am graduating in June, 2016. I attended high school in South Korea until the first semester of my 10th grader year. However, due the conflict of my future dream between my mother and me, I decided to study abroad in the United States.

I came to the high school called Lansdale Catholic High School in Pennsylvania as a 10th grader. When I first came to USA, I did not have any significant struggles with speaking or listening English, but I could not make friends easily due to the big cultural difference. However, after I joined several extracurricular activities (Chorus, Band, Drama club, and so on), I was able to make many friends.

While South Korea has a passive and cramming education system, the United States has an independent and self-support education system. The USA system fit me perfectly, and I could enjoy studying and try my best to pursue my future dream.

The ignorance and negligence of the agency that helped me when I first came here caused me to lose a number of opportunities of experiencing many things. However, after I transferred to Joy Education, I got better grades in school, a good score on the SAT, and college counseling. I found a college that is perfect for me, and decided on my major based on my interest and talents; love singing, playing instruments, and helping others. Without Joy’s help, caring, and support, it would not have been easy at all.

I am planning to attend Immaculata University in Pennsylvania with the major of Music Therapy. After visiting Immaculata University, I learned that it has a great education system, a beautiful campus, and wonderful professors. Moreover, I was awarded with the Presidential Scholarship which provides me with full tuition coverage. After graduating college, I will attend graduate school and pursue a Ph.D degree in Music Therapy and become a professor.

I really appreciate the support and care from Joy Education, with the Joy education, I could finish my high school life well.

저는 University of Miami 에 Class of 2021 로 들어가게 된 배경근입니다.
